In these days of social distancing and limited travel, the Shadow Spirit provides a total solitary ride and Three Mile Island is only 40 minutes away. I used to live in the ten mile zone. As you round the bend and crest the hill into Goldsboro, the cooling towers of TMI dominate the horizon.
You cross the railroad track and turn north on River Road. To your right stretch what seems to be endless boat ramps and parking. And as you look across the river, the now quiet towers stand as an impressive reminder of the worst nuclear disaster in US history.
Other nuclear disasters in the US have directly killed people, such as Idaho Falls, but none reached the billions of dollars of cleanup that Three Mile Island caused. Nor did any other nuclear disaster stop the nuclear industry in its tracks.
